COURSE DESCRIPTION :

SACRED AND PROFANE ITALIAN MEDIEVAL MUSIC
Micrologus’ musicians will present the main “Ars Nova” performance and interpretation techniques, practiced in Italy in the fourteenth century. Many written documents of this period testify the passage from monody to a more complex polyphony. Examples of this trend are the compositions - madrigals, hunts in canon form and ballades - for 2 and 3 voices by Masters such as Francesco Landini, Jacopo da Bologna, Gherardello, and others. The course will also present examples of sacred music practiced by the local religious fraternities and composed to accompany laud songs in vernacular. Instrumental music, such as salterellos and “istampite” from the precious London code, will be taken into consideration as well.

ANCIENT DANCE
The most ancient dances with choreographic descriptions date the second half of the fifteenth century and are attributed to Domenico da Piacenza and his adherents, among which was Guglielmo Ebreo da Pesaro. We will use some of these important documents to study the fundamental steps and the composed choreographies of dances and “bassedanze”, composed either for one or many dancing couples. The participants, together with Micrologus, will have the opportunity to investigate the possible connections between fourteenth century music and dance. The number and level of classes will depend on the level and number of participants.

AFTERNOON ACTIVITIES
Afternoon workshops: they will be characterized by:
- a theoretical section in which particularly complex passages of the documents treated during the course will be discussed and explained;
- a practice section in which musical techniques and ludic aspects will combine playfully. The workshops will be taught either by one or more instructors of the morning main courses, depending on number of participants.
